This week we provide a product review of Crotch Guard skin care oil from all the guys in our team.  Between us on Team Trivelo we have been pretty conventional in our approach to skin protection.  Most cycling with some of us still going old school with Vaseline and the more adventurous venturing no further than chamois cream.  With chamois in shorts a thing of the past it is no surprise that a more technical solution has come to light.

Crotch Guard Skin Care Oil

Our article this week covers a product review of this very area.  An intriguing new product that we tested from Derma-Tect who are a company based in the states.  The product that can be bought directly from the manufacturer is called Crotch Guard leaning heavily on the mantra of a product that does exactly what it says on the tin.  Between us on Team Trivelo we covered over 25 hours of cycling.  We tested this product during the winter months where we battled against a range of temperatures and wet weather conditions.  Perfect really for road testing a product that has been designed to create a defensive barrier for your skin and eliminate friction & chafing.

Product experience of using Crotch Guard

In terms of what the product looks and feels like you can forget your tub of creams.  It is a small bottle of clear liquid with a spray nozzle for application.  Think of a plastic aftershave type product except for being used for completely different purposes.  We wouldn’t recommend showering your privates in a bottle of Boss bottled.  Crotch guard is sprayed onto the skin being applied in a light mist that is cooling without it being in a freeze spray style shocker.  This mist seems to just be absorbed really quickly into the skin without leaving it feeling soaked in some fluid. The clever science boffins at Derma-Tect have developed the product so it strengthens the skin membranes. It ensures you are fully protected from the elements and the dreaded chafing effects of hours in the saddle.  The claims on the packaging give assurance that this lasts up to 8 hours.  We didn’t manage any 8 hour + sessions during our testing but in sessions of 3 hours the effects seemed consistent throughout without any degrading and ill affects.

Alternatives to Crotch Guard

So why bother with this and deviate away from your favoured pot of chamois cream?  Firstly its hypo-allergenic so for those with skin conditions who might have been prevented from using creams previously at last there is an answer.  Secondly its anti-bacterial.  Maybe not the most hygienic of thoughts but do your shorts always end up in the wash between rides?  If not then that chamois cream plus sweat is building up in them.  Effectively waiting to quite literally bite you in the ass.  With no fragrances or preservatives its as natural product as you can imagine to be spraying around one of your most sensitive bodily parts.

Summary of Crotch Guard

So what is our summary on this product review of crotch guard?  Given that we didn’t even notice we were wearing the Crotch Guard on our rides & applying it required no mess or fuss we have to say we were hugely impressed.  Would we recommend this to our readers?  100%. For triathletes it gives a better scope for enduring the swim than a cream.  So allowing you to apply before you start and ride with confidence through certainly half-ironman distances.  If you’ve tried this over a full ironman we’d love to hear from you and inform us before next season!
